Responsibility:

  • Equipment Operation: Operates information processing equipment, remote computer terminals linked to mainframes, and micro-computers to record, edit, store, and revise correspondence, reports, and statistical tables.
  • File & Record Management: Maintains records by entering new data, editing existing files, maintaining disk directories, and updating table of contents or index entries.
  • Document Production & Printing: Sets up appropriate controls for formatting, margination, and spacing, then prints completed documents to draft or letter quality.
  • Maintenance & Troubleshooting: Analyzes machine stops, observes console indicators, and performs routine minor operator preventative maintenance on equipment.
  • Clerical Support: Performs a variety of related clerical functions, makes arithmetical computations, and compiles simple statistical reports when not operating equipment.

Qualification:

To qualify for this rewarding role, candidates must meet specific educational and skill requirements. Applicants must possess a high school diploma or equivalency diploma, OR have at least one year of clerical experience. Additionally, candidates must demonstrate the ability to type at least 35 words per minute. This position is a provisional civil service appointment, which requires New York State residency and successful completion of a civil service exam when offered.

A successful candidate will possess a good working knowledge of information processing equipment, office terminology, and standard business vocabulary. Strong proficiency in proper grammatical usage, punctuation, and arithmetic computations is essential. You must also have the ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions while maintaining a high level of accuracy across all tasks.
